What Mobility Equipment Should I Hire for My Central Coast Holiday?

Accessible holiday cabins on the Central Coast — we deliver everything you need before you arrive

One of the most common questions we get at Mobility Joy is a simple one: what equipment do I actually need for my holiday? The answer is different for every person and every trip. Someone recovering from a hip replacement has very different needs to an elderly parent visiting family for a week, and both of them need different things to someone who uses a powered wheelchair every day at home.

This guide walks through the most common situations we help with and gives you a practical starting point for working out what to hire for your Central Coast stay. All equipment is delivered and set up at your accommodation, whether that's a hotel, Airbnb, holiday park cabin or private home, anywhere on the Central Coast.

A Few Practical Questions to Think Through First

Before looking at specific equipment, it helps to think about the realities of your trip. Where are you staying? A holiday park cabin is quite different to a hotel room or a beachside Airbnb. What does a typical day look like? Are you planning to spend most of your time relaxing at the accommodation, or do you want to get out and explore the area? How far will you need to walk, and on what kind of surfaces?

The other thing worth thinking about is what you use at home. If you rely on a shower chair or grab rails at home, you will almost certainly need them on holiday too, and most holiday accommodation simply does not have them. Bringing your own is awkward and adds unnecessary stress to the trip. Hiring from us means everything is set up and waiting when you arrive.

Tip: If you are unsure whether the accommodation already has what you need, call the property directly and ask. Most holiday park managers and Airbnb hosts are happy to tell you exactly what is installed and what is not.

The Most Commonly Hired Equipment for Holiday Stays

Based on what our customers hire most often, these are the items that make the biggest practical difference.

Shower chair or shower commode

The most requested item for holiday stays. Holiday park cabins and Airbnbs listed as accessible often have a wider bathroom but no shower chair at all. If you use one at home, hire one for your stay. It makes every morning far simpler and safer.

Mobility scooter

A scooter genuinely transforms a holiday. Instead of sitting in the cabin while others walk to the beach or the shops, you are out there doing it yourself. Most Central Coast holiday parks have flat paved paths that suit scooters well, and the foreshore areas around The Entrance, Terrigal and Gosford are all easily navigated by scooter.

Lightweight wheelchair

Ideal for longer outings where walking distances are not practical. A lightweight transit wheelchair is easy for a family member or carer to push, folds into a car boot without fuss, and lets the person using it go anywhere without having to think about how far the walk is.

Adjustable bed or bed rails

Getting in and out of an unfamiliar bed can be genuinely difficult, particularly after surgery or for people with limited strength. Bed rails give you something secure to hold onto. An adjustable hi-lo bed makes the whole process far more manageable and can make a real difference to sleep quality over a longer stay.

Rollator or walker

For people who walk with a rollator at home, travelling without one is not realistic. We can have one waiting at your accommodation when you arrive so you do not need to squeeze it into the car or manage it through airports or ferry terminals.

Raised toilet seat

One of the simplest and most practical hire items. Standard toilet heights are low and difficult for people with hip or knee problems. A raised toilet seat with armrests adds height and gives you something to push up from. It is a small thing that makes a real difference every single day of your stay.

What to Hire Based on Your Situation

Everyone's situation is a little different. Here are the most common situations we help with and what we would typically suggest for each.

Post-surgery recovery

Recovering from a hip or knee replacement

The focus here is avoiding low seats and unsupported surfaces. The key items are a raised toilet seat with armrests, a shower chair with a backrest and armrests, and bed rails to help you get in and out of bed safely without twisting. A rollator for moving around the accommodation rounds out the package nicely.

Elderly visitor

Elderly parent or grandparent joining a family holiday

The focus here is independence and safety. A mobility scooter means they can join the family at the beach or the shops without tiring. A shower chair and raised toilet seat cover bathroom safety. If the accommodation has an uneven entry, a portable ramp can make a big difference. A lightweight wheelchair is useful for longer outings.

Wheelchair user

Travelling with your own power wheelchair or needing a hire chair

If you are bringing your own chair, you may still need bathroom equipment the accommodation does not have. A shower commode that doubles as both a shower chair and a toilet chair is often the most practical solution. We can also supply portable ramps if the cabin entrance has a step.

NDIS respite stay

Carer bringing a client or participant for a funded respite stay

Respite stays typically need the most complete equipment setup. A hoist, shower commode, adjustable bed and pressure care mattress are commonly hired together for respite bookings. We work regularly with carers, support workers and support coordinators arranging Short Term Accommodation stays and we know what most cabins are missing before we even arrive.

Support at Home

Client using Support at Home funding for a short break

If you are receiving support through the federal Support at Home program (formerly My Aged Care), a short stay on the Central Coast with appropriate equipment in place can form part of your care plan. Call us and we will help you work out what is possible under your current package before you book.

Not sure where you fit? Just call us on 02 4302 7133 and describe your situation. We will ask a few practical questions and suggest exactly what you need, with no obligation.

Using NDIS Funding for Your Holiday Equipment

If you are an NDIS participant, there are a few different ways your plan may be able to cover equipment hire for a holiday stay, depending on how your plan is structured and what your goals are. It is worth understanding the main categories before you book.

Short Term Accommodation, often called STA or respite, is the support category specifically designed to cover short stays away from home for NDIS participants. It covers accommodation and the support provided during that stay. If your STA booking includes equipment hire, that cost may be claimable alongside the accommodation component. Your support coordinator or plan manager can confirm what is possible under your specific plan.

Assistive Technology supports cover equipment hire directly, including wheelchairs, hoists, shower commodes, pressure care mattresses and adjustable beds. If you are hiring these items for personal use during a holiday, an AT claim may be appropriate depending on how your plan is funded and managed.

Core Supports and consumables can sometimes cover smaller day-to-day items. If you are unsure which category applies to your situation, we are happy to talk it through with you. As a registered NDIS provider we work with plan managers, self-managed participants and NDIA-managed participants regularly, and we can provide the documentation your plan manager needs to process a claim.

NDIS, DVA and Support at Home Funded Hire

We are a registered NDIS provider, a DVA approved supplier, and we work with clients receiving support through the Support at Home program. Equipment hire for holiday stays, respite bookings and short-term accommodation can be covered under several funding categories.

Call us on 02 4302 7133 and we will help you understand what is possible under your specific plan or funding package before you commit to anything.

Hiring for Airbnbs and Private Holiday Homes

Airbnbs and private holiday homes are increasingly popular on the Central Coast, and many of them suit people with mobility needs well, particularly those on a single level with open-plan layouts and level entries. The challenge is that almost none of them have any mobility equipment installed.

We deliver to any private address on the Central Coast. We arrive at an agreed time, set everything up and make sure it is positioned and adjusted correctly before we leave. We show any carers or family members how to use the equipment safely. At the end of your stay, we come back and collect everything from the property.

Hiring for Holiday Park Cabins

Holiday parks are one of the best options for accessible holidays on the Central Coast. The flat paved paths between facilities suit scooters and wheelchairs well, accessible cabins are generally more spacious than a standard hotel room, and the relaxed pace suits people who want to take their time and not feel rushed.

Even so, holiday park cabins that are advertised as accessible often have gaps: no shower chair, a toilet that is too low, a small step at the cabin entrance. We fill those gaps. We work with holiday park guests across the Central Coast regularly and know from experience what most cabins are missing.

How to Book and What Happens Next

Call us on 02 4302 7133 and tell us where you are staying, when you arrive, and what you think you need. We will confirm availability and give you a clear quote. If you are not sure exactly what to hire, just describe your situation and we will help you work it out.

We deliver before your arrival where possible so everything is in place when you walk in. Setup takes around 20 to 30 minutes depending on what has been hired. We show you and any carers how everything works before we leave, and we collect from the accommodation at the end of your stay.
