Yesterday we completed the annual service on one of our Ottobock B4 scripted powerchairs here at our Central Coast workshop. It's the kind of work that doesn't make headlines, but it perfectly illustrates what we mean when we say our customers are associates for life.
When you invest in a scripted powerchair—whether it's an Ottobock B-Series, a Quickie Q series, or any other complex mobility system—you're not just buying a product. You're entering into a long-term partnership that requires ongoing technical expertise to maintain optimal performance.

What's Actually Involved in Annual Service?
The Ottobock B-Series service manual specifies a comprehensive maintenance schedule that our ATLAS FIOS certified technicians follow meticulously. This isn't a quick visual inspection. It's a systematic evaluation of every critical component that keeps the powerchair performing safely and reliably.
Power Systems and Batteries
We start with the foundation: the battery system. This includes inspecting the batteries themselves for any signs of deterioration, checking all battery contacts for corrosion or wear, examining cables for damage, and testing the automatic circuit breaker. We also inspect external power supply receptacles and the external charging receptacle—components that see regular use and can develop issues over time.
Drive Unit and Suspension
The drive unit inspection covers the motors with their brake locks, the suspension system that provides ride comfort, drive wheel swing arms, and the anti-tipper mechanisms that provide critical safety protection. Each component is checked for wear, proper function, and correct adjustment.
Caster Wheels and Stability Systems
The front caster wheels and their associated systems require detailed attention. We inspect the caster forks, the swivel locks that allow users to lock the casters for stability, track stabilisers, suspension or rigid elements depending on the configuration, caster wheel swing arms, curb climbing assists, and transport brackets.
This particular B4 is fitted with solid non-marking grey tyres rather than pneumatic tyres, which eliminated the need for air pressure adjustments while maintaining excellent indoor performance and eliminating puncture concerns. It's a configuration choice that proves its worth over time.
Control Systems
Modern powerchairs are sophisticated electronic systems. We inspect the controller, seat module, control modules, control panel, and attendant control if fitted. These components need to communicate flawlessly to provide safe, predictable operation.

The Critical Element: Seating Adjustments
Here's where many service providers fall short, and where the real value of ongoing professional support becomes evident.
When an occupational therapist scripts a complex powerchair, they're prescribing precise seating angles, positioning supports, cushion configurations, and adjustments matched specifically to their client's postural and functional needs. But here's what happens over time: daily use, vibration, temperature changes, the natural settling of materials—all of these gradually affect those carefully calibrated settings.
During yesterday's service, we found that the seating components had shifted enough to potentially impact the user's positioning. Nothing dramatic or dangerous, but enough that the chair wasn't performing to its original prescription. We systematically restored every adjustment to specification.
This included checking the seat plate and frame, verifying seat height adjustment mechanisms, testing seat tilt function, confirming back angle adjustment, inspecting cushion and upholstery condition, examining all cables, and testing the belt system for proper operation.
Safety and Accessibility Features
We complete the service by inspecting all covers—front cover, rear cover, battery cover, seat module cover, and splash guards for drive wheels and caster wheels. We check side panels including armrests, side panel holders, and clothing protectors. We inspect legrest holders and, where fitted, lighting systems including lights, brackets, and associated cables.
Why This Level of Service Matters
A scripted powerchair represents a significant NDIS investment and is absolutely critical to independence. The difference between a powerchair that's been properly maintained and one that's been neglected shows up in performance, reliability, and most importantly, in how well it continues to meet the user's postural and mobility needs.
When seating adjustments drift out of specification, it's not just uncomfortable—it can impact skin integrity, respiratory function, upper limb function, and overall health. When drive systems aren't properly maintained, it affects range, reliability, and safety. When control systems develop faults, it can leave someone stranded.
The Local Advantage
One of the most common frustrations we hear from people using scripted powerchairs is the difficulty getting timely service. Many national suppliers require users to wait weeks for a technician to travel from Sydney or other metro centres. For someone whose powerchair is their primary means of mobility, that's not acceptable.
Our commitment to the Central Coast means we're here when you need us. Our technicians are local, our parts inventory is comprehensive, and our response time is measured in days, not weeks.
Associates for Life: What It Really Means
We say our customers are associates for life, and this annual service perfectly demonstrates what that means in practice.
We go far beyond scripting and product delivery. We provide prompt after-sales support and out-of-the-box solutions when challenges arise. We bring dynamic commitment and genuine passion to problem-solving. Most importantly, we're here for the long term, ensuring that the significant investment you've made in mobility equipment continues to deliver its full value year after year.
When we hand over a scripted powerchair after initial configuration, we're not thinking "job done." We're thinking "this is the beginning of a partnership." The user knows their powerchair will always perform as prescribed. The OT knows their assessment work is being protected long-term. Families know they have reliable local support they can count on.
That's the uncompromising service that builds confidence—not just in the equipment, but in the relationship.
