If you're getting mobility equipment through an aged care package, you might be wondering: can I choose which shop supplies my walker, wheelchair, or lift chair?

The short answer is yes. Here's what you need to know.

Your rights when getting mobility equipment:

You can choose your mobility equipment supplier.

The new Aged Care Act gives you the right to make decisions about your care — and that includes choosing where you get your walking frame, wheelchair, scooter, or other equipment.

Your preferences should be respected.

If you've found a mobility shop you trust, or you want to try equipment before buying, your provider should work with you to make that happen.

You can speak up without worry!

If you're not happy with how your equipment needs are being handled, you have the right to raise concerns.

The law protects you from being treated differently for speaking up.

How to request your preferred mobility equipment supplier

Simply let your plan manager or provider know which mobility shop you'd like to use. If you have a quote for a walker, wheelchair, or other equipment, share it with them.

In most cases, your choice should be accommodated as long as the pricing is reasonable.

Not getting the mobility equipment you want?

1

Talk to your provider.

Let them know which mobility shop you want to get your equipment from. Ask how they can help make it happen.

Most providers want to support your choices.

2

Ask for an explanation.

If they say you can't use your preferred mobility equipment supplier, ask them to explain why in writing.

You're entitled to understand the reason.

3

Get help if you're stuck!

If you can't resolve it with your provider, there are people who can help.

Free advocacy services like OPAN can support you, or you can contact the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission.
